ԻՆՉՈՒ՞ Է ՀԱՐՍԸ ՏՂԱՅԻ ՏՈՒՆ ՄՏՆԵԼՈՒՑ ԱՌԱՋ՝ ԱՓՍԵ ԿՈՏՐՈՒՄ․․․

Another one of the folk traditions related to the traditional Armenian wedding process and rituals is the brides' breaking of a glass plate or bowl at the threshold of the groom's home ( right before she steps into her new home ) but do you know why?
Այսօր այս ծեսը մեկնաբանում են՝ "որ չարը խափանվի․․․", սակայն այն իր արմատներով գալիս է դարերի խորքից և միանգամայն այլ իմաստ ու խորհուրդ է ունեցել։
Ամուսնանալով՝ աղջիկը փաստորեն կտրում էր կապը հայրական տան հետ և մտնում էր նոր օջախ, որը նրա համար անսովոր էր և՛ իր նոր մթնոլորտով ու փոխհարաբերություններով, և՛ վարվեցողությամբ։ Առաջին անգամ աղջիկը ափսե էր կոտրում հայրական տնից դուրս գալիս, որը խորհրդանշում էր այդ ընտանիքից նրա դուրս գալու փաստը, որ նա հետ չվերադառնա, այսինքն՝ նոր տնից "դուրս չանեն", կամ նա չմնա առանց ամուսնու։ Իսկ երկրորդ անգամ հարսը ափսե էր կոտրում նոր օջախ մտնելու շեմին, որ խորհրդանշում էր նրա կողմից "հետ գնալու" անկարելիությունը, ինչպես նաև՝ հայրական տան հետ կապերի լիակատար խզումը և նոր ընտանիքին անդամագրվելու ու հարազատանալու փաստը։ Ասուհետև նա պետք է պաշտեր այլ օջախ (յուրաքանչյուր տան օջախ (թոնիր) այդ տան սրբությունն էր համարվում), քանի որ ըստ ժողովրդական հավատքի՝ նորահարսը մտնելով փեսայի տուն, անցնում էր այդ տան պահապան ոգիների հովանավորության տակ։
Ըստ որում ՓԵՍԱՆ՝ ԱՓՍԵ ՉԵՐ ԿՈՏՐՈՒՄ․․․։
In our days, this ritual is interpreted as "repelling the bad omen"... , however this tradition is rooted in the ancient times and it symbolized a completely different belief.
Getting married, a girl would leave her paternal home to join a new ( what is called in Armenian ) "Odjakj", unfamiliar to her, with new relationships, behaviors and traditions/customs... The first time a bride breaks the glass is when leaving her paternal home to the Grooms' home and it was interpreted as a gesture or symbol of her leaving this house with "No return" to it ( meaning happy marriage, no divorce or separation ) and of course including that her husband does not leave for heaven. The second time the bride would break the glass plate or bowl would be at the threshold of the grooms' house ( her new home ) and this one symbolized the impossibility of going back or getting sent back to her parents ( separated, divorced...etc..) it also symbolised, her separation from her paternal home and joining her new family and entering a happy relationship with the members of that household ), as of then she would worship the new "Odjakh", as each household had an "Odjakh" besides the "Tonir", in the older days ( the pagan ancestor worship was common among the Armenian ancestors ), eventually, the folk tradition kept this belief alive but the actual "Tonir" stayed as part of every household life and the actual "Odjakh" was emptied from its pagan meaning, the "hearth" of the home, "Odjakh" means "hearth" is for the cold winters... (back to the text), the bride, entering the groom's home and joining his household she would be a "protegee" of the "guardian angel"/spirit of her new family.
The Groom does not break plates...
