"Dan Tovlat" or why did our grandmas return some of the stored foods to the pantry...?
Այս սովորությունը եկել է մեր նախաքրիստոնեական հավատքից, որը «քրիստոնեացվել» է ու շարունակել մնալ որպես մեր կենցաղային սովորություններից մեկը։ Ժողովրդի մեջ լայն տարածում ուներ այն հավատը, որ ամեն մի տուն ու ընտանիք ունեն իրենց պահապան ոգին, որը հովանավորում է ընտանիքն ու նրա բարեկեցությունը (հարստությունը)։ Այս ոգու կերպարը , չնայած իր բավականին կայուն ու միանշանակ նկարագրին, Հայաստանի տարբեր տարածաշրջաններում հայտնի էր տարբեր անուններով։ Օրինակ Վանի բնակիչները այս ոգուն անվանում էին՝ Շնողք, որոնց կարծիքով, յուրաքանչյուր մթերքի պահոց-կճուճի մեջ ուր պահվում էին՝ յուղ, ղավուրմա, պանիր, ալյուր, բրինձ և այլն, ապրում է Շնողք-ոգին՝ այդ մթերքների պահապանը։ Այդ իսկ պատճառով, երբ վերցնում էին այդ մթերքներից, ասում էին՝ «Հիսուս Քրիստոս», որպեսզի Շնողքը դուրս չգա այդ ամանից ու այն շուտ չդատարկվի։ Վերցրածի մի փոքր մասը հետ վերադարձնելով աման-պահոց, հավատում էին որ ոգին եթե հանկարծ դուրս է եկել՝ կվերադառնա իր տեղը։ Այս ոգու բնակության վայրը տարբեր տարածաշրջաններում տարբեր է։
Վայոց ձորում, ինչպես նաև Հայաստանի շատ շրջաններում այս ոգին կոչվել է «տան դովլաթ» և բնակվել է մթերքի պահոց-ամաններում՝ տան մթերքի պահեստամասում (մառանում)։

The tradition is rooted in our pre-history (the ancient times), it was practiced throughout the Christian era and continues to be part of our current traditions. One of the widespread folk beliefs was that every family, every household had its own guardian spirit ( in the Christian times we call it guardian angel ), which sponsors the family and its well-being ( wealth ). In spite of its solid and definite character, this "spirit" character is identified by different names in the different parts of Armenia. For example, the Armenians of Van called this spirit "Shnoghk-Voki" ( in Armenian Շնողք-ոգի) "Voki" meaning spirit in Armenian and Shnogh/Shinogh meaning builder, constructive position..., they believed that in every stored ( annual or seasonal storage) Oil/butter, Ghavrma, cheese, flour, rice, etc, jars or bins lived a "Shnoghk-Voki"/the guardian of these stored foods. And, that is why whenever they needed to use some of the stored food they said, «Հիսուս Քրիստոս»" Hisous Chrisdos" meaning Jesus Christ, and they believed that the if they said so "Shnoghk-Voki" will not leave ( meaning or symbolizing "plenty" they will never run out of food, and they will continue to prosper ), so, they would return or leave some at the bottom of the jar or the bin ( never empty the jars completely ), because according to their beliefs, if the "Shnoghk -Voki" had left for some reason, it will return where the remaining foods are in order to protect and ensure prosperity for the family... However, not all the believers in this folk tradition agreed on the location where this spirit lived/stayed, for example, in Vayyots Dzor and many other regions of Armenia this spirit has been called " Dan-Tovlat", and has lived in the food pantry/storage/basement of the house.
